Life Is Like a Line

This is one of the most insightful, and emotional books that I have read on Bipolar Disorder. It is a book that I have recommended to all my Psychology students.

There are so many misconceptions in our society of people who are diagnosed with mental health issues. The author in her own story gives us great insight into what it is like to live in a world where her moods are all over the place. Even those who live in this world cannot explain to others what they are living.

Imagine having an illness that takes over your life; each day is a struggle and many disbelieve what you are experiencing. I think that not only was this book therapeutic for the author, but also gives everyone some insight that what happens on a daily basis.

The author was not diagnosed until her 40’s. Yet she lived everyday in hell trying to figure out what was going on with her. Many go untreated due to lack of information from the medical profession. Once people learn you have Bipolar they treat you as if you were a monster.

Even as a Psychologist, it is very difficult to get family, friends and co-workers to understand the disease and that if treated the individual can live a good life. I appreciate the author’s writing about this subject and the personal experiences she had and how she came to realize it was running in her family and what she has done to educate herself and others.

A truly amazing read.
